Inaugural Humana APP Louisville Open Generates Significant Local Market Media Coverage, Showcases APP's Market Expansion Opportunity
Professional competition, civic partnership and PickleY’all festival create multiple opportunities for audience growth and sponsor exposure
The Association of Pickleball Players (APP) celebrated a successful Louisville debut as the 2026 Humana APP Louisville Open generated extensive media attention surrounding four days of professional and amateur competition, Oct. 15–18, at the Kentucky International Convention Center. Paired with the inaugural PickleY’all community pickleball festival, the event showcased the APP’s ability to enter a new market, mobilize corporate and civic partners, and build visibility beyond traditional sports coverage.
Media coverage and promotion included all five major local news outlets WHAS-TV (ABC), WLKY-TV (CBS), Spectrum News Louisville, WAVE-TV (NBC) and WDRB-TV (FOX), placing the tournament and surrounding festivities in front of audiences across news, sports, entertainment and community programming. For the APP and its partners, that breadth of exposure demonstrated the value of an event that connects elite competition with accessible experiences for the wider community.
WHAS-TV was especially prominent in the event's coverage, delivering a series of previews and on-site reports highlighting the APP Tour’s first Louisville appearance, tournament preparations and the festival’s emphasis on wellness and participation. WLKY-TV was an official media partner for the tournament, and provided additional livestream viewing access through its Very Local digital platforms. WAVE-TV featured a festival preview with the Louisville Sports Commission, while shared WDRB+WAVE reporting spotlighted top APP Tour pros including all-time medals leader Megan Fudge and Glauka Carvajal-Lane. Together, these stories gave audiences multiple reasons to discover the event and engage with the APP.
Three signature moments anchored the event’s public profile: the opening press conference with Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, the PickleY’all ribbon cutting ceremony and a free community concert by Grammy Award-winning artist Shaggy held right outside the convention center.
The opening press conference with Mayor Greenberg brought civic leadership into the event’s launch, reinforcing the connection between the APP’s Louisville debut and the city’s commitment to downtown activity and community participation. The occasion provided a platform to introduce professional pickleball to local audiences and highlight the collaboration behind the tournament and festival. Alongside Mayor Greenberg, participants included Humana Foundation CEO Tiffany Benjamin, and APP pro pickleball player and Louisville native Spencer Moorman.
The Oct. 16 ribbon cutting ceremony marked the opening of PickleY’all, extending the experience from tournament spectatorship to hands-on participation. Free play opportunities, clinics, family activities and partner experiences gave newcomers a welcoming introduction to pickleball while creating additional opportunities for sponsors to connect directly with consumers. APP Founder Ken Herrmann was on hand for the ceremony, along with Mayor Greenberg and representatives from Humana and the University of Louisville.
Shaggy’s Oct. 17 concert added a major entertainment attraction to the weekend, broadening the event’s appeal to music fans and families alongside dedicated pickleball followers. The performance complemented the competition inside the convention center and demonstrated how the APP’s events can serve as the centerpiece of a larger community celebration.
According to Meltwater monitoring for the week of the festivities, coverage of the Humana APP Louisville Open and PickleY’all generated more than 157,000 mentions across all outlets.
“Louisville embraced the APP with tremendous enthusiasm, and we are grateful to Mayor Greenberg, Humana, our community partners, volunteers and every fan who helped make this inaugural event such a success,” said APP Founder Ken Herrmann. “The competition, the media response and the energy surrounding the Humana APP Louisville Open and PickleY’all showed what we can accomplish when world-class pickleball becomes part of a citywide celebration. This is the kind of foundation that helps us build lasting audiences and stronger partnerships, and we are excited to return to Louisville in 2027 with even more momentum.”
Above all else, Louisville offers a concrete example of the APP’s approach to market development: combining professional and amateur competition with an invested title partner, civic collaboration and programming that welcomes new audiences. That approach creates opportunities to build local loyalty, expands sponsor relationships, and generates content that keeps the APP visible before, during and after tournament play.
The APP will look to build on those relationships and the inaugural event’s media momentum when the Tour returns to Louisville in 2027.
